*Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026 carries a simple but powerful message: **Don't Make It Easy for Them**. While cybercriminals continue to use increasingly sophisticated tools and techniques, many successful attacks still rely on something surprisingly simple: human behaviour.*

The good news? Small actions taken every day by employees can make a huge difference.

**The easiest target is often the most vulnerable**

When people think about cybersecurity, they often picture hackers breaking through complex systems or organisations defending themselves with expensive security software.

The reality is usually much less dramatic.

Cybercriminals are often looking for the path of least resistance. They target weak passwords, unattended devices, unpatched software, and employees who are busy, distracted, or simply trying to get through their day.

In many cases, attackers don't need to break in, they just need someone to accidentally let them in.

**Why cybersecurity matters to every business**

Cybersecurity is no longer just an IT issue. It is a business issue.

A successful cyber-attack can disrupt operations, cause financial losses, damage customer trust, and create significant reputational harm. For many organisations, the impact extends far beyond the immediate technical recovery.

Whether it's ransomware preventing access to critical systems, a phishing email leading to compromised accounts, or sensitive data being exposed, the consequences can affect every part of a business.

That's why cybersecurity cannot be left solely to technology - people play a critical role.

**Small actions create big protection**

One of the biggest misconceptions about cybersecurity is that staying secure requires specialist knowledge. In truth some of the most effective security measures are also the simplest.

**Strong passwords matter**

Using unique passwords for different accounts remains one of the easiest ways to reduce risk.

When the same password is reused across multiple systems, a single compromised account can quickly become several compromised accounts.

Password managers can help employees create and store strong passwords without needing to remember dozens of complex combinations.

**Multi-factor authentication adds an extra barrier**

Even if a password is stolen, multi-factor authentication (MFA) can stop attackers from gaining access.

It only takes a few extra seconds during sign-in, but it can prevent a potentially serious security incident.

It's one of the simplest ways organisations can make life significantly harder for cybercriminals.

**Think before you click**

Phishing attacks continue to be one of the most common methods used by attackers.

The emails often look convincing. They may appear to come from colleagues, suppliers, customers, or trusted brands.

A few moments spent checking the sender, verifying an unexpected request, or questioning an unusual link can prevent a major security breach.

Stopping for ten seconds is often faster than spending weeks recovering from an incident.

**Keep devices locked and updated**

Many security risks don't start online.

An unlocked laptop, a lost mobile phone, or outdated software can all create opportunities for attackers.

Locking devices when stepping away from a desk, installing updates promptly, and reporting lost equipment immediately are simple habits that significantly reduce risk.

**Cybersecurity is really about habits**

The strongest organisations are rarely the ones with the most security tools.

They are the organisations where good security habits become part of everyday work.

Much like health and safety, cybersecurity works best when everyone takes ownership of their role.

This doesn't mean employees need to become security experts. It means creating a culture where people:

- Pause before clicking unexpected links
- Use strong, unique passwords
- Enable multi-factor authentication
- Report suspicious activity quickly
- Keep software and devices updated
- Follow agreed security processes

Individually, these actions may seem small.

Collectively, they create a powerful line of defence.

**Don't make it easy for them**

Cybercriminals are constantly looking for easy opportunities.

The organisations that reduce risk most effectively are not necessarily the ones spending the most money. They are the ones making simple, consistent choices that remove those opportunities.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026 is a reminder that security is everyone's responsibility.

You don't need to stop every attack.

You just need to avoid being the easy target.

Because when every employee takes a few simple steps to work securely, organisations become significantly harder to compromise.

And sometimes, making it difficult is enough to make attackers move on to an easier target.
